The City of Milton Parks & Recreation Commission will be hosting the annual Prairie Seed Collection at Crossridge Park on October 21, 2017 from 10 a.m. to Noon. In conjunction with this event, the commission will be unveiling the new logo that will be used to promote the protection of pollinators and a billboard design donated by Lamar Advertising Company to further promote the protection of pollinators.
The annual Prairie Seed Collection at Crossridge Park is a great educational opportunity hosted by the Parks & Recreation Commission to learn about prairies and native plants. The seed collected is used around the city for beautification and to reduce mowing costs. The seeds have been used to continue the expansion of the prairie at Crossridge Park, around retention ponds, and on the hills along the STH 26 bypass. The restoration of natural prairie areas help support the protection of pollinators, which include bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and many more insects and animals.
The commission recommends participants bring garden or leather gloves, sunscreen, water, a paper bag for seed, and a camera to take pictures. Some people find scissors or snips helpful. Also bring appropriate medication if you are allergic to any insects or plants. Wear clothes that are appropriate for walking in tall grasses, dress in layers, and wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet or muddy.
