The annual Prairie Seed Collection at Crossridge Park is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 21st. This is a great educational opportunity hosted by the Parks & Recreation Commission to learn about prairies and native plants. The seed collected is used around the city for beautification and to reduce mowing costs. The seeds have been used to continue the expansion of the prairie at Crossridge Park, around retention ponds, and on the hills along the STH 26 bypass.
The commission recommends participants bring garden or leather gloves, sunscreen, water, a paper bag for seed, and a camera to take pictures. Some people find scissors or snips helpful. Also bring appropriate medication if you are allergic to any insects or plants. Wear clothes that are appropriate for walking in tall grasses, dress in layers, and wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet or muddy.
