News Release - Rock County Public Health
Rock County, WI – Rock County Public Health Department recently confirmed that the Delta variant has been detected in Rock County. Variant B.1.617.2, also known as the Delta variant, was first identified in Wisconsin in April 2021. Researchers have found that this strain spreads more rapidly than the original SARS-CoV-2 virus and all other variants of concern to date. More research is needed to determine if the Delta variant causes more severe illness. Full vaccination does provide good protection against the Delta variant, including over 90% effectiveness against hospitalization and death when rare breakthrough cases occur.
Four of the more contagious variants have now been detected in Rock County. The Alpha (B.1.1.7), the Beta (B.1.351) and the Gamma (P.1) variants were previously detected. With these variants in our community, it is very important that everyone continue to follow the prevention guidance. Get vaccinated, wear a mask if you are unvaccinated or have health concerns, maintain 6 feet of space between yourself and others in public places, wash your hands, stay home if you are sick, get tested for COVID-19 if you have symptoms, and avoid crowded indoor spaces.
